KVA Veterinary Clinician of the Year 2017/2018

We are proud to announce that our own Dr. Gabriel Ouma is the “KVA Veterinary Clinician of the Year 2017/2018”. The award ceremony was held during “World Rabies Day Celebrations” at Acacia Premier Hotel Kisumu.

This award recognizes a veterinarian who has excelled in offering quality clinical veterinary service which is sensitive to the needs of the animals under his/her care and provides good customer service to the owner of the animals.

The nominees will be considered on the total impact of their work within the locality they operate in and their ability to mentor the younger veterinarians. All this was not possible without your support and the teamwork of the "small five VET CLINIC Team". We say a big THANK YOU!!

Cheap is always expensive!

This poor dog was brought in as an emergency on 7th of June. It had been castrated at the owners place in a horrible, unprofessional way (the whole procedure was performed wrongly by all standards). The dog was in a lot of pain, the wound was fully open and infected when it was brought to as 4 days after the said surgery. Our doctors decided best way to save it from dying was to perform a corrective surgery.

He is lucky we were able to fix it and currently he is recovering at the clinic. Most important - the dog is fine but it also cost the client more than double at the end. The client is happy and has learnt a lesson that cheap is expensive.

Use a registered veterinary surgeon who works at a clinic or is well known in your community.

Pictures (left: before the corrective surgery, right: our anesthetic machine)

P.S. One of the main anesthetic drugs might be terminated by the world pharmaceutical bodies, meaning it will be hardly accessible on the market. If successfully reclassified it won't be available at all.
Begs the question how will that affect you and your pet?
That means the only ethical and safe option is use of anesthetic gas for neutering and other surgeries. Most clinics in Nairobi have anesthetic machines, that means quacks coming to your house cannot sedate the animal properly. Just be keen and use a safe, clean solution!

Successful Pet Relocation to South Africa

Dear small five VET CLINIC - Team,

This is a thank you letter for all you did for Rory our dog who is very much part of our family. We are thankful we chose you to help with importing our dog to South Africa from Kenya. The service you gave us from when our dog was a puppy was outstanding and especially over the February-March months of 2017 where you completed all the necessary paper work and tests that enabled us to import our dog successfully into South Africa. Not only did you assist us with the paper work but you helped us with the booking of our flights, with the agent on the Kenyan and South African side for Rory. Our dog Rory only spent 5 days in quarantine and passed all his tests. We would recommend small five VET CLINIC to anyone who wants to export or import their animals in or out of Kenya.

Kind regards,
Robert, Catherine, Ezekiel and Rory Falconer

Surgeries

All surgeries carried out at our practice are handled with utmost care within minimum time possible. Our theater and all equipment within are sterile. This is to minimize arising complications.

When you book your surgical operation at the small five VET CLINIC, our surgeons will explain the whole procedure  to you, cost and complications, before you can sign the surgical consent form. We will give you a follow up call once operation has been completed successfully and another once your pet is fully recovered from anesthetic.

Please note that some procedures demand we board your pet for a number of days to monitor recovery progress as we attend to any arising complications.

Please don't litter - spay or neuter your critter!

Think it can't make a difference if you spay or neuter your pet? Think that your cat or dog is purebred or "has papers" that its offsprings will be of value? Thinking that "just one litter" won't hurt anyone?

Look at the pictures below and think again! And neutering your pet has also other advantages:
  • Female animals on heat attract howling males, more sleep, less noise.
  • Intact males are more likely to roam (and get lost).
  • Less territorial marking :)
  • Neutering reduces dominance and aggression.
  • Neutering reduces the risk of prostate disorders and other disease.
  • You save animals from being euthanized due to full shelters.
There's a right time and a wrong time to have the surgery done. Do not neuter too early, your animal needs its reproductive hormones help to develop its bones and joints properly.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy

Happy to have received this cute Rhodesian Ridgeback pup on behalf of client from South Africa yesterday evening. The owner will pick it tomorrow. It's playful, cheeky and very excited to leave its transport box. We gave it a lot of playtime in the garden after the long flight.

Get your import/export permit first hand from "small five VET CLINIC"

We are happy and proud to announce that we are now authorized agents for import and export permits for your pets and want to give you a rough idea what to expect if you decide to take your animal abroad or bring it to Kenya.

The most obvious advantage is you get everything first hand from us.
No waiting, running around doing payments here and there, struggling with authorities and officials. We do the whole process for you, even deliver the pet to your doorstep (within NAIROBI). The price depends on the country the animal is going / coming from. Different countries, different laws. Ensure you inquire on time (most European countries, Australia and New Zealand) have very strict regulations.

PET IMPORT (into Kenya)
The Kenyan pet import process demands that only healthy, rabies free pets are allowed entry, we will guide you and process all your relevant documents as the pet must enter Kenyan airspace as manifest cargo. We will help you with the clearing and handling process, vet check and any health adjustment if necessary on arrival.
Pups below three months should not be vaccinated against rabies. Micro-chipping is important but not a must.

EXPORT
The pet export process will majorly be determined by the destination country. If you are relocating your pets we advise you to inform our office at least 4 months in advance for preparation purposes. Micro-chipping and then vaccination is a mandatory requirement. Most countries will require a battery of blood work and other tests before approval. Feel free to ask for a quote.

  • Micro-chipping (we do micro-chipping, it must be done before vaccination)
  • Up to date vaccination certificate (with stamp and signature of a KVB registered vet surgeon)
  • Drawing blood for tests (which depends on the country)
  • Processing the blood samples
  • Dispatching them to a recognized lab
  • Contacting the vet authorities in the export country to organize import permit
  • Organizing a sky kennel with watering container and funnel
  • Pet handling and logistics at the port of exit

We wish you and your four legged friends a happy and hustle free relocation.

MPESA Buy Goods Till Number 922954.

PAYMENT POLICY
In order to provide the highest possible standard of care for your pet and keep the practice doors open, we require the best drugs and materials available and a lot of expensive equipment. All funded by the fees you pay. We try to keep our fees reasonable but also realistic. To help keep administration costs to a minimum, we ask that payment is made at the time of treatment and we are pleased to accept most major credit cards, MPESA, cash, bank transfers, current company cheques.
