Wild Mongoose Attack Turkey

Earlier this week the "small five VET CLINIC" got an emergency call from one of our patrons.

One of her turkeys had been attacked by a suspected mongoose troop causing severe trauma to the right limb thigh muscles and ripping off part of under-belly tissue.

Our team was able to handle this carefully and is glad the turkey lives to see another day.

  

How to wash / groom a dog

1. It is advisable to use warm water as this will ease body grease removal. We recommend cleaning your pet at least once a week. 
2. Clean the whole body first then finish with the head to minimize eye irritation. 
3. Wet the body hair surface, use a normal bar soap for initial cleaning. This removes the body grease and prepares the skin for shampoo action. Rinse off the soap. 
4. Ask for the best medicinal shampoo next time you visit your vet. 
5. To allow the shampoo (medicinal/anti-parasitic) to work effectively, apply shampoo evenly over the whole body, soak for 5-10 minutes with the right shampoo 
6. Rinse off the excess shampoo using warm water. Now clean the head using the same procedure but within 2 minutes. 
7. Use a dry clean towel to dry your dog. You can as well let your pet dry in the open field

  

Dog Fight

Did you know that dogs are extremely territorial?
Did you know that these cute creatures submit to hierarchies?

Dogs will fight for space, mates, feed and attention. Some will fight to death.

To avoid unnecessary veterinary costs and prevent dog fights (like in the graphic images below) please isolate Alphas' from Omega's, make sure they get enough quality feed. Daily walks and exercise reduces the testosterone levels hence a calm effect.

Neutering plays a big role in taming aggressive dogs.

Mange (Mite Infestation)

There are three types of mange:

1. NOTOEDRIC MANGE
   Highly contagious disease of cats and kittens.
   
2. OTODECTIC MANGE
   These mites are common cause of external ear infections especially in cats and dogs. Commonly found in the ear canal. Clinical signs include head shaking, ear shaking, continual ear scratching and ear droop, pruritus at times is seen, dark brown cerumen accumulation in the ear. Can lead to the perforation of the tympanic membrane.
   
3.  SARCOPTIC MANGE (canine scabies)
   Highly contagious disease of dogs found worldwide. These mites attack only specific hosts but can infest humans and animals that come across them. They spend almost the entire life cycle on the host. Female mites burrow tunnels underneath the skin layers to lay eggs. They are transmitted to other dogs by direct contact.
   Transmission through indirect contact is also possible.
   
   Clinical Signs
   Hypersensitivity to mite products occur leading to pruritus and itchiness. This will lead to papular skin eruptions due to self trauma (itchiness) developing thick skin crusts. Secondary bacterial and yeast infection may occur starting on the ventral abdomen, chest, ears, elbows and hocks and if untreated becomes generalized.
   Long term ill dogs develop seborrhea, severe skin thickening with fold formation and crust build up. Animals lose weight and lymph nodes are swollen.
   Such dogs may eventually die.
   
   Treatment
   The most effective mode of treatment involves hair clipping, a series of topical seborrheic shampoo and acaricide treatment seven days apart. A few systemic injections are also carried out.
   
   Diagnosis At our facility we diagnose based on the history of severe pruritus and itchiness of sudden onset. We also perform a deep skin scrapping and faecal test where we identify the parasites and eggs.
